Safety Officer Vacancy at Thaba Joint Venture

The Thaba Joint Venture (JV), a partnership between Sylvania Metals and Limberg Mining Company, invites interested and suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Safety Officer at the Thaba Operation. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting operations by ensuring and promoting compliance with the Mine Health and Safety (MHS) Act, while maintaining high standards of safety and risk management across the site.

This role requires a proactive individual with strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, capable of driving safety initiatives, conducting audits and investigations, and fostering a culture of safety awareness. The Safety Officer will also ensure that all SHERQ systems, policies, and procedures are effectively implemented and maintained in line with company and legislative requirements.

Safety Officer – Thaba Operation

The Thaba Joint Venture (JV), which is a JV between Sylvania Metals and Limberg Mining Company, is looking for a Safety Officer to support the operations ensuring and promoting the MHS Act.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Promote the MHS Act and ensure a safe work environment.
  • Building sound stakeholder relationships with the host mine.
  • Maintain the SHERQ system for the business unit.
  • Enforce compliance as per MHS Act requirements.
  • Incident investigations.
  • Maintain and review processes and procedures according to ISO standards.
  • Audit, report findings, and implement corrective actions.
  • Perform Risk Assessments.
  • Audit compliance of sub-contractors.
  • Advise the Plant Manager on related SHES issues.
  • Act as a proxy for the Company.
  • Training change and people management.
  • Manage required safety documentation – near misses, HIRA books, etc.
  • Manage SHE Representatives.

Knowledge/Education Requirement:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Minimum – COMSOC 1 and 2 or SAMTRAC essential
  • Computer Literate
  • Diploma or Degree in Risk Management will be an advantage
  • SHE systems and processes
  • Mine Health & Safety Act

Experience and requirements:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience.
  • Experience in investigations, inspections, and reporting.
  • Safety training experience
  • Good administration is essential.
  • Risk Management
  • A driver’s license and own transport are compulsory
