Position Overview
The Junior Health and Safety Officer role focuses on supporting the implementation, monitoring, and maintenance of Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (HSSE) systems within the organization.
Responsibilities include ensuring that workplace safety standards align with legal requirements and internal company policies. The role involves assisting with safety administration, compliance monitoring, training coordination, and safety reporting.
The successful candidate will assist in maintaining safe work environments across the three operational branches located in Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town.
The position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage safety-related documentation and processes in a fast-paced operational environment.
Key Responsibilities
Safety System Implementation
- Assist with the development, implementation, and maintenance of Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) management systems
- Ensure systems comply with South African legislation including the OHS Act, COID Act, and Environmental Conservation regulations
- Support implementation of safety policies and procedures across operational departments
- Maintain safety documentation and ensure procedures remain up to date
Compliance Monitoring
- Ensure all departments comply with legal safety requirements and company policies
- Conduct routine compliance checks and inspections
- Maintain records demonstrating adherence to safety legislation
- Assist in identifying potential safety risks and recommend corrective actions
Safety Training and Awareness
- Identify safety training requirements for employees
- Coordinate safety training sessions and toolbox talks
- Maintain accurate records of training attendance and certifications
- Promote workplace safety awareness among employees
Safety Meetings and Reporting
- Coordinate monthly safety meetings across departments
- Prepare safety performance reports and documentation
- Maintain records of meeting outcomes and action plans
- Assist management with safety performance monitoring
Incident and Accident Investigations
- Assist with investigation of workplace incidents, accidents, and near-miss events
- Conduct root cause analysis where required
- Document investigation findings and recommendations
- Support development of corrective and preventive action plans
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Management
- Coordinate distribution of PPE to employees
- Maintain PPE issue registers and records
- Monitor proper use of protective equipment
- Ensure damaged or expired PPE is replaced promptly
Safety Inspections and Audits
- Conduct regular workplace safety inspections
- Support internal safety audits and compliance checks
- Identify hazards and assist with implementing control measures
- Maintain inspection records and compliance documentation
Contractor Safety Compliance
- Liaise with contractors working on company sites
- Ensure contractors comply with safety regulations and company policies
- Conduct safety inductions for contractors before site access
- Review contractor safety documentation and permits
Emergency Preparedness
- Assist with the development and maintenance of emergency procedures
- Support planning and coordination of evacuation drills
- Maintain emergency response documentation and procedures
- Ensure employees understand emergency protocols and safety procedures
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- Valid driver’s license
- 1–2 years experience in Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (HSSE) compliance
- SAMTRAC or NEBOSH certificate
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
