The role includes managing compliance documentation, maintaining equipment registers, supporting contractor management processes, and ensuring statutory inspections and testing are completed as required. Frey’s Food Brands is seeking a qualified and experienced Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) Coordinator to join our Health & Safety department. This role is responsible for coordinating, supporting, and monitoring the implementation of the company’s Safety, Health, and Environmental management systems. The successful candidate will play an important role in ensuring that the organization maintains compliance with all applicable safety legislation, environmental regulations, and internal company standards.
The SHE Coordinator will work closely with the SHE Manager, employees, contractors, and other departments to promote a strong culture of safety and environmental responsibility. The role requires a proactive individual who is capable of identifying risks, implementing safety initiatives, and ensuring continuous improvement in occupational health, safety, and environmental performance.
Purpose of the Role
The primary purpose of the SHE Coordinator position is to coordinate and support the effective implementation of the company’s Safety, Health, and Environmental systems across all operations. The role focuses on ensuring that the workplace remains safe, compliant with legal requirements, and aligned with best practices in health, safety, and environmental management.
The SHE Coordinator is responsible for supporting initiatives that aim to reduce workplace hazards, prevent occupational injuries, and minimize environmental impact. The role also involves promoting safety awareness, improving safety performance, and ensuring that employees understand their responsibilities regarding health, safety, and environmental practices.

Key Responsibilities
The SHE Coordinator will be responsible for a range of operational and administrative functions related to safety, health, and environmental management. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Safety Committee Management
- Establish and maintain the Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) Committee.
- Coordinate and organize monthly safety committee meetings.
- Prepare meeting agendas and distribute them prior to meetings.
- Record and maintain accurate minutes of safety committee meetings.
- Circulate meeting minutes to relevant stakeholders.
- Display important safety information and committee updates on workplace notice boards.
Reporting and Performance Monitoring
- Prepare monthly SHE performance reports for internal review.
- Compile quarterly SHE performance review reports for management.
- Monitor safety performance indicators and identify trends.
- Provide recommendations for improving safety performance.
Legal Compliance and Documentation
- Ensure that all legal safety appointments are fulfilled and updated on time.
- Maintain accurate records of statutory appointments and responsibilities.
- Manage and maintain the SHE document management system.
- Ensure all safety documentation is current, accurate, and properly archived.
- Maintain site documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
Liaison with Authorities
- Liaise with regulatory authorities and external stakeholders when required.
- Ensure that all site permits are valid and updated according to relevant legislation.
- Support inspections conducted by regulatory authorities.
- Ensure compliance with environmental and occupational health regulations.
Incident Management
- Ensure all workplace incidents are properly recorded and tracked.
- Participate in incident investigations and root cause analysis.
- Ensure that corrective actions and countermeasures are implemented and closed out within required timeframes.
- Monitor incident trends and implement preventive measures.
Emergency Preparedness
- Compile and maintain site emergency response plans.
- Ensure employees are trained in emergency response procedures.
- Coordinate emergency response drills and evacuation exercises.
- Ensure all employees become familiar with emergency evacuation procedures.
- Arrange training and support for emergency response teams.
Occupational Health Support
- Coordinate annual medical examinations for employees.
- Liaise with medical clinics to arrange employee medical assessments.
- Follow up on any medical concerns identified during examinations.
- Support the Occupational Health Practitioner (OHP) with clinic-related matters.
- Assist with investigations related to occupational diseases or workplace health issues.
Employee Wellness and Health Programs
- Support Human Resources in implementing employee wellness initiatives.
- Assist with employee assistance programmes focusing on health awareness.
- Promote workplace health campaigns and wellness activities.
- Encourage employee participation in health and safety initiatives.
Environmental Management
- Arrange environmental monitoring surveys every two years.
- Review results of environmental surveys and address identified issues.
- Implement corrective actions to address environmental concerns.
- Promote sustainable environmental practices within the organization.
Waste Management
- Ensure waste manifests and disposal records are maintained.
- Confirm safe disposal certificates are obtained and filed.
- Maintain waste disposal schedules and documentation.
- Ensure compliance with environmental waste management regulations.
Internal Audits and Risk Management
- Conduct internal SHE audits to identify workplace risks.
- Review safety procedures and compliance with company standards.
- Recommend corrective actions and improvement strategies.
- Monitor implementation of corrective measures following audits.
Permit to Work Audits
- Conduct audits of permit-to-work systems.
- Ensure high-risk tasks are properly authorized.
- Confirm compliance with safe work procedures during high-risk activities.
Lock-Out and Tag-Out Compliance
- Conduct lock-out and tag-out system audits.
- Ensure proper equipment isolation procedures are followed.
- Verify that maintenance activities comply with safety standards.
Contractor Management
- Drive contractor management processes and ensure contractor compliance.
- Ensure contractors follow all safety rules while on site.
- Maintain contractor safety documentation and records.
- Monitor contractor performance related to safety compliance.
Equipment Compliance
- Ensure equipment registers are maintained and updated.
- Confirm that statutory inspections and equipment testing are conducted as required.
- Maintain documentation of inspection results and certifications.
Security Management
- Update site security procedures according to business risks.
- Ensure security service providers follow company security procedures.
- Monitor security processes to ensure compliance with company policies.
Training and Awareness
- Assist in identifying training needs related to safety and environmental management.
- Support the development of safety training programs.
- Organize safety awareness campaigns to highlight key risks.
- Promote a strong safety culture across all departments.
Qualification Requirements
Applicants interested in this role should meet the following qualifications and experience requirements:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management, or a related field (preferred).
Professional Certifications
- Postgraduate qualifications or professional certifications in SHE are highly advantageous.
- Certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH, or ISO Lead Auditor will be beneficial.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in Safety, Health and Environmental roles.
- Experience within a relevant industry environment is preferred.
- Proven experience implementing and maintaining SHE management systems.
Technical Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation.
- Understanding of environmental management regulations.
- Familiarity with international safety standards such as OHSAS 18001, ISO 45001, and ISO 14001.
