Job Overview

Merensky Timber is recruiting a SHEQ Officer to support Safety, Health, Environment and Quality compliance within a site-based industrial environment. The role focuses on maintaining operational safety standards, ensuring regulatory compliance and supporting disciplined execution of SHEQ systems across the sawmill operations.

The position requires a practical, hands-on approach to managing risk, conducting inspections and maintaining compliance systems while working closely with operational teams to reinforce safe working practices and continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with SHEQ legislation and company standards
  • Maintain SHEQ systems, legal registers and compliance documentation
  • Conduct site inspections, audits and risk assessments
  • Implement corrective actions based on audit and inspection findings
  • Investigate and report incidents and non-conformances
  • Manage contractor compliance and control site access
  • Deliver SHEQ training, inductions and awareness programmes
  • Compile reports and submit required documentation
  • Support incident response processes
  • Work with line management to promote safe and disciplined work practices
Minimum Requirements
  • Matric (Grade 12)
  • National Diploma in Health and Safety or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar industrial environment
Advantageous Requirements
  • SAMTRAC qualification
  • Experience in industrial or sawmill environments
  • Knowledge of ERP systems
Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong understanding of SHEQ legislation and systems
  • Experience conducting audits, inspections and risk assessments
  • Contractor management experience
  • Strong report writing and communication skills
  • Computer literacy (MS Office)
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently
