The successful candidates will provide professional and efficient driving and transportation services to support the Council’s scientific, technical and operational activities.
This opportunity is suitable for candidates who have at least Grade 10, a valid Code 10/C1 driver’s licence with a Professional Driving Permit (PDP) and a minimum of six months’ relevant driving experience.

About the Driver Position
The Driver will be responsible for providing effective and efficient motor vehicle driving services to the Council for Geoscience and its various business units. The position plays an important role in supporting scientific and technical programmes by transporting employees to different locations for fieldwork and other official activities.
The successful candidates may be required to transport scientific staff, support personnel, stakeholders, documents, parcels, equipment and other goods. Drivers will also be expected to ensure that allocated vehicles are properly maintained, roadworthy and safely operated.
The position may involve travelling to different locations depending on operational requirements. Candidates should therefore be comfortable working according to transportation schedules and responding appropriately to changes or unexpected circumstances.
Key Responsibilities
Motor Vehicle and Transportation Services
The successful candidates will be responsible for rendering effective and efficient motor vehicle driver services to the Council for Geoscience.
Duties will include transporting scientific staff when they are required to undertake field duties as part of the organisation’s geoscience technical programmes. Drivers may also assist scientific staff with the collection and curation of geoscience data during field activities.
The position requires the safe operation of light and medium motor vehicles to transport CGS employees, stakeholders and goods. Drivers must ensure that employees and other authorised passengers reach their designated destinations safely and on time.
Candidates will be expected to follow daily transportation schedules and ensure that planned trips are completed efficiently. When unexpected circumstances affect the schedule, the Driver must manage the situation appropriately and consult the relevant Manager or Supervisor when necessary.
Any changes to transportation arrangements must also be communicated to the relevant stakeholders in a timely manner.
Vehicle Safety and Maintenance
Drivers will be responsible for helping ensure that vehicles used for official duties remain roadworthy, safe and properly maintained.
This includes conducting pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to identify damage or other problems. Any concerns identified during inspections should be handled in accordance with the organisation’s procedures.
The Driver may also assist with delivering and collecting vehicles from maintenance agents, repair facilities and other third parties.
When required, the Driver may assist with the recovery of broken-down vehicles. Candidates must understand the importance of responsible vehicle use and must follow all applicable road traffic laws and safety requirements.
Records and Administration
The position also includes administrative responsibilities related to vehicle use, transportation and deliveries.
Drivers will be required to complete prescribed records and logbooks relating to motor vehicles, passengers, goods and other items handled during official duties.
The successful candidates will also collect, deliver and distribute company mail, documents and parcels to the correct recipients. Accurate and up-to-date records must be maintained for mail and parcel collection, delivery and distribution.
Allocated vehicles, documents, parcels, mail and other items must be safeguarded against theft, misuse, damage or loss.
Drivers may also be required to perform additional administrative or operational duties when necessary.
Working Hours and Operational Requirements
The position may require flexibility depending on the operational needs of the Council for Geoscience. Drivers may occasionally be required to assist with operational requirements outside normal working hours when requested.
Candidates should be able to work under pressure, respond to changes in schedules and deal with unforeseen transportation challenges.

Minimum Educational Qualification
Applicants must meet the following minimum educational requirements:
- Grade 10
- Valid Code 10/C1 driver’s licence

Candidates who possess additional licences or certificates may have an advantage during the selection process.
Advantageous Licences and Certificates
The following qualifications or certificates will be considered an added advantage:
- EC licence or Code 14 with PDP
- TLB operating certificate
- Forklift Certificate

Knowledge and Experience Requirements
Candidates must have a minimum of six months’ relevant experience as a Driver.

The ability to read and interpret maps and directions is required. Candidates should also be able to operate a GPS or similar navigation system when travelling to unfamiliar locations.
An understanding of the responsibilities and potential liabilities associated with transporting passengers is also important.
