About the Role

Idwala Industrial Holdings has interests in lime, carbonates, magnetite and other industrial minerals across various locations. The Phalaborwa Magnetite Operation requires an experienced SHEQ professional who can provide visible leadership and ensure that safety, health, environmental and quality standards are maintained throughout the operation.

The SHEQ Officer will be expected to spend significant time in the field, conducting inspections, identifying hazards and ineffective controls, assigning corrective actions and following up to ensure that identified issues are properly resolved.

The position also involves maintaining compliance with applicable legislation, standards, codes of practice, company procedures and management systems. The successful candidate must be comfortable working in an operational environment where risks associated with machinery, mobile equipment, electrical and mechanical systems, stored energy and other industrial activities need to be effectively controlled.

Key Responsibilities

The SHEQ Officer will be responsible for maintaining a visible presence across the plant and ensuring that SHEQ standards are consistently applied.

Key duties include conducting regular plant inspections, identifying hazards and deteriorating or ineffective controls, assigning corrective actions and ensuring that responsible employees complete agreed actions within the required timeframes.

The successful candidate will drive day-to-day SHEQ compliance and management-system discipline across the magnetite processing operation. This includes monitoring critical-risk controls and ensuring that employees, contractors and supporting activities comply with applicable requirements.

Occupational hygiene coordination will also form an important part of the position. Responsibilities include coordinating exposure monitoring, reviewing and interpreting occupational hygiene reports, implementing corrective actions and managing the relationship between occupational hygiene activities and medical surveillance.

The SHEQ Officer will maintain and update applicable Codes of Practice, legal appointments, risk assessments, procedures, training records, authorisation records and other compliance documentation. Records must remain accurate, current and ready for internal or external audits.

Technical SHEQ assurance will be required across a range of plant and equipment, including mills, classifiers, conveyors, trackless mobile machinery, workshops, electrical and mechanical equipment, machine guarding, stored-energy hazards and isolation procedures.

The role will also involve leading or coordinating incident investigations, audits and corrective actions. Investigations must identify the underlying risks and determine whether existing controls are effective. Corrective actions must then be followed through to verified and sustainable close-out.

Contractor SHEQ management is another key responsibility. The successful candidate will coordinate contractor safety requirements and monitor compliance with applicable site standards.

Additional responsibilities include coordinating fire and emergency-response equipment, security-related SHE controls and occupational health and emergency medical equipment readiness.

The SHEQ Officer will analyse SHEQ trends and performance, identify material risks and escalate significant issues when necessary. The role will also contribute to continuous improvement of the integrated management system.

The position requires professional engagement with Foskor SHE representatives and specialist service providers during inspections, meetings, audits and follow-up activities.

Employee training will form part of the position, including training employees on applicable Codes of Practice (COPs) and safe work procedures.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for managing the Atmospheric Emission Licence (AEL), tracking compliance conditions, completing internal audits and preparing quarterly reports.

Another important responsibility is the implementation and maintenance of SHEQ management systems aligned with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
