Purpose of the Position
The Paramedic (Basic Life Support) position focuses on delivering immediate medical care during emergency situations. The successful candidates will provide essential lifesaving treatment, including first aid, to individuals experiencing critical medical conditions.
The position requires professional emergency medical care, appropriate patient handling and transportation, accurate documentation and proper use of ambulances, medical equipment and supplies. Paramedics will also contribute to health initiatives, public relations activities and standby medical coverage during special events when assigned.
Key Responsibilities
The appointed candidates will be expected to perform a wide range of emergency medical and operational duties, including:
- Operating ambulances and other company equipment safely and efficiently.
- Complying with applicable regulations, emergency medical protocols, standards of care, motor vehicle requirements and patient rights.
- Following Robben Island Museum Ambulance rules, policies, directives and instructions issued by management.
- Preparing inventories and ensuring that medical supplies are adequately stocked.
- Inspecting emergency medical equipment regularly to ensure that it is functioning correctly.
- Maintaining a professional, pleasant and polite demeanour when dealing with patients, families, medical personnel, colleagues and members of the public.

Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the stated educational, professional registration, licensing and driving requirements.
The minimum requirements include:
- National Higher Certificate (NQF Level 5) or an equivalent qualification.
- Valid State Basic Life Support Paramedic Licence and Certification.
- Valid CPD letter.
- Valid Code C1 driver’s licence.
- Valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP).
- Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

Work Experience
Candidates are required to have relevant practical experience in emergency medical services.
The required experience includes:
- At least two years’ experience as a Basic Life Support Paramedic.

- Ability to read and interpret documents, including safety rules, operating instructions, maintenance instructions and procedures.

Any damage, safety issue, equipment failure, supply shortage or other problem that could affect emergency response operations must be identified and reported promptly.
Accurate documentation is also required. Records may include information relating to patient transportation, equipment inspections, supplies used, incidents and other activities connected with ambulance operations.
