Musina Local Municipality Grade 7 Positions

Duties

The successful applicants will undertake general labouring activities associated with stormwater drainage, road repairs and maintenance. Duties include assisting with road works, stormwater projects, painting, carpentry and bricklaying.

Work will also involve clearing blocked drainage systems and removing debris and alien vegetation from manholes, pipes, canals and other drainage infrastructure using handheld tools.

Additional duties include placing stencil boards for road lettering, using equipment to create straight lines, marking and numbering road surfaces, and painting applicable road lines and signage. Employees may also operate road-marking machinery and will be responsible for ensuring that such equipment is cleaned and correctly calibrated.

The role may also involve assisting with the jointing of overhead and underground cables and lines on isolated networks, as well as removing and replacing burnt-out bulbs and damaged cover plates.

The position also involves loading and offloading items and performing kitchen and dining-related duties when required.


3. Service Workers: Parks and Recreation

Duties

Responsibilities include carrying out gardening activities such as soil cultivation, digging, forking, mulching, watering, weeding, pruning, bed preparation and planting.

Employees will also perform lawn maintenance and cultivation and use and maintain hand tools and basic light machinery. Equipment may include cylinder and rotary mowers, trimmers and leaf blowers.

Other duties include safeguarding equipment and machinery and maintaining the cleanliness of tool sheds and storerooms.

Employees will help keep borders, thoroughfares and street footpaths clear of litter and empty litter bins at designated municipal sites.

Additional responsibilities include marking sports pitches, running tracks and field-event areas, preparing and maintaining plant rockeries, and planting trees, shrubs, vines, perennials and grass.

Watering and irrigation duties will also form part of the role. Seasonal landscaping activities may include pruning, sweeping, removing leaves, planting bulbs, dividing and transplanting plants, and cleaning litter from planting beds.

Duties include walking, picking up and loading refuse bags into refuse vehicles. Employees will also place clean litter bags at designated premises and clean spilled waste by sweeping, gathering and placing waste into refuse bags for collection.

The position involves collecting refuse from business premises, lifting mobile waste containers and gathering and loading refuse bags into municipal vehicles.

Employees may also move refuse to create space and assist with offloading refuse from vehicles at disposal sites using handheld tools.

Further duties include removing and washing debris from tools, containers and vehicles. This may involve the use of disinfectants and pressurised cleaning systems such as handheld hoses.

Duties

The position involves assisting with electricity-related maintenance and installation activities.

Employees may operate handheld equipment such as jackhammers to cut through concrete or tarred surfaces and dig holes for installing new cables or recovering old cables.

Other duties include laying cables, positioning supporting structures such as poles, clearing and tinning conductors, bending and strapping materials, and stripping individual conductors.

Employees may assist with the erection and installation of poles, cross arms, stays, lines, aerial transformers and switchgear.

The role also involves using handheld power tools to drill and mount junction boxes, brackets, cable trays and racks, as well as tightening screws and bolts.

Additional responsibilities include assisting with cable and wire termination at junction boxes, connecting blocks and terminals. This can include soldering, fitting lugs and harnessing wires.

Employees may also remove and replace defective components and assist with stripping, cleaning and jointing activities.

7. Heavy Plant Operator

Required competencies include communication and writing skills, grading, grader techniques and machine control.

Duties

The Heavy Plant Operator will be responsible for operating mechanical plant and applying safe driving techniques.

Responsibilities include planning travel routes and complying with applicable traffic rules and regulations. The official vehicle must be operated with care and maintained appropriately.

Before using vehicles, employees must conduct roadworthiness inspections and identify and report vehicle defects and service requirements.

Other responsibilities include keeping the official vehicle clean, maintaining the vehicle logbook and submitting inspection information.

Any accidents, damage or losses must be reported to the supervisor immediately.


8. Artisan Assistant: Fleet Maintenance

  • Be studying towards a trade certificate/apprenticeship in mechanical work, or have at least three years of experience working in a mechanical workshop

Applicants should have good communication skills, basic computer literacy and proficiency in using basic hand tools. The position requires the ability to lift objects weighing between 5 kg and 50 kg, as well as teamwork and numeracy skills.

Duties

The successful candidate will collect, clean and maintain hand tools, power tools, machines and equipment.

The position involves carrying working materials to work sites and keeping the workshop clean and organised.

The Artisan Assistant will provide support with repairs and fitting activities and assist with pipework and welding.

Other duties include greasing machines, changing oil, checking fluid levels and assisting with the operation of machines.

The successful applicant will also assist with servicing municipal vehicles and plant.
