The Northern Cape Department of Health invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Legal Administration Officer (MR1–5). The role requires an LLB Degree or any recognized legal qualification, along with strong knowledge of legal research, case law, drafting of legal documents, litigation, advocacy, and dispute resolution. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to analyse complex legal matters, provide sound advice, and draft clear, well-motivated legal documents. Depending on the grade level applied for, applicants must meet the minimum post-qualification legal experience requirements ranging from no experience (Grade 1) to fourteen years (Grade 5).

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research, interpret case law, draft legal documents, advise clients, provide guidance during consultations, and mentor junior staff on legal processes and interview techniques. The role also includes providing support on medico-legal matters such as litigation and legal advisory services. SALARY:

  • MR 1: R252 855 per annum
  • MR 2: R292 596 per annum
  • MR 3: R324 579 per annum
  • MR 4: R388 392 per annum
  • MR 5: R464 634 per annum

(Salary level will be determined by years of appropriate post-qualification legal experience)

REQUIREMENTS:

  • LLB Degree or any recognised legal qualification (requisite for admission as an attorney or advocate).
  • Knowledge and understanding of drafting legal documents, legal research principles, case law interpretation, litigation, advocacy, dispute resolution, and cash flow management.
  • Advanced skills in problem-solving, analysis, communication (written and verbal), honesty, integrity, research, and computer literacy.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Grade 1: No previous legal experience required
  • Grade 2: At least 1 year appropriate legal experience after qualification
  • Grade 3: At least 2 years appropriate legal experience after qualification
  • Grade 4: At least 8 years appropriate legal experience after qualification
  • Grade 5: At least 14 years appropriate legal experience after qualification

DUTIES:

  • Conduct, analyse, interpret and advise (including mentoring of juniors) on legal research and relevant case law.
  • Present motivations/proposals on case strategy to achieve desirable and justifiable outcomes.
  • Draft legal documents and mentor juniors on drafting clear, well-motivated legal documents.
  • Conduct client interviews to determine goals and objectives; advise the department on possible courses of action in line with legal entitlements and client instructions.
  • Document all interviews and advice rendered; guide junior staff on advanced interviewing techniques and appropriate advice in complex matters.
  • Provide comprehensive support on medico-legal services (litigation and legal advisory services).
