Illovo Sugar (South Africa) is inviting suitably qualified candidates to apply for the SHER Officer role, which will be based in Merebank, KwaZulu-Natal.
POSITION: SAFETY, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT & RISK OFFICER(FLM)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for the position of SHER Officer based at the Lacsa plant in Merebank. This position reports to the Maintenance Engineer.
Key performance areas
- Promote Lacsa SHER awareness and culture of continuous SHER improvement and adherence to safety protocols and standards.
- Engage with Downstream Safety, Health & Risk Manager and QFSE Manager to facilitate compliance with Merebank SHER management systems, standards and processes.
- Co-ordinate and facilitate SHER risk assessments, and work with operations to develop best mitigation plans.
- Coach and guide Line Management in the assessment, management and continuous improvement of SHER performance.
- Facilitate SHER investigations and coordinate the verification of closeout actions.
- Facilitate the closeout of audit findings.
- Create SHER awareness using various fit for purpose media (e.g., toolbox talks, noticeboards, electronic media).
- Conduct inspections and internal audits to oversee and ensure the adherence to legislative and requirements.
- Co-ordinate and manage all site management SHER and external assurance systems via the site SHR Head and QFSE Manager.
- Implement SHER programmes and plans (e.g., water usage plan).
- Manage all monitoring schedules to ensure compliance with statutory requirements for safety, environment and occupational health.
- Test and validate inputs into the ABF monthly HSE reporting process to reduce likelihood of findings.
- Compile SHER management reports.
- Co-ordinate effective testing of emergency response protocols together with the SHR Head and QFSE Manager.
- Track SHER inspections in CMMS (e.g. maintenance Connection) and facilitate effective closeout.
- Ensure full compliance on SHE meeting attendance and close-out of all relevant actions.
- Maintain and facilitate the SHE training plan.
- Oversee the effective management of all waste streams to be disposed, recycled and reused (records and procurement).
- Promote and adhere to ABFS’s procedures, policies and guidelines, including, without limitation, those relating to SHER, Competition Law and Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC).
Minimum specifications / requirements
- Diploma/Degree in Safety/Quality Management/Risk Management or related area.
- SAMTRAC/NEBOSH qualification.
- ISO 9000/22 000 Lead Auditor qualification an advantage.
- 2-3 years’ experience in an operational environment (Factory/Agriculture), working in a health and safety role.
- Training in First Aid and Fire Prevention is an added advantage.
- Knowledge of relevant SHER legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to plan, organise and track activities for self and others.
- Problem solving and analytical skills.
- Sound interpersonal and communication skills to be able to convey information effectively and influence others.
- Ms Office proficiency.
