Applicants must have a Grade 12 certificate, completed Basic Field Ranger Course, relevant firearm competency certification, knowledge of the Firearms Control Act, Health and Safety Level 1 understanding, a clean criminal record, and the physical fitness required to perform extended patrol duties under challenging field conditions, with appointments made in accordance with the Employment Equity Plan.

Job Purpose
Field Guard Monitors play a critical role in supporting infrastructure maintenance teams, protecting contractors working in conservation zones, and assisting with environmental compliance activities under national legislation such as the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA).
The role combines field security duties, patrol work, conservation support, and reporting responsibilities, making it ideal for candidates seeking experience in environmental protection and ranger-related operations.
Key Responsibilities
Successful candidates will perform the following duties:
Protection and Security Support
- Guarding contractors and maintenance teams working inside the park
- Providing safety oversight during infrastructure and technical operations
- Supporting law enforcement presence within operational zones
Patrol Operations
- Conducting regular patrols on foot and by vehicle
- Monitoring activity in assigned operational sections
- Reporting suspicious activity or environmental risks
Incident Monitoring and Reporting
- Recording wildlife sightings where required
- Reporting environmental incidents
- Keeping accurate patrol records and operational logs
- Supporting compliance with conservation regulations
Conservation Assistance
- Assisting with conservation-related field activities
- Supporting environmental monitoring programmes
- Contributing to biodiversity protection initiatives
Legislative Compliance Support
- Helping enforce discipline and compliance in accordance with environmental laws
- Supporting implementation of procedures aligned with NEMA
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
Educational Qualification
- Grade 12 (Matric) certificate
Mandatory Training Certifications
Applicants must have completed one of the following firearm competency training options:
Option 1
- Manual loading / bolt action firearm competency
(Unit Standards 119651 and 123519)
OR
Option 2
- Self-loading rifle competency
(Unit Standards 119650 and 123511)
Additionally required:
- Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act
(Unit Standard 117705)
Professional Training
Candidates must have completed:
- Basic Field Ranger Course
- Health & Safety Level 1 training
Experience and Competencies
Applicants should demonstrate:
- Basic understanding of field ranger duties
- Ability to patrol long distances in challenging terrain
- Physical fitness and medical readiness
- Strong observation and reporting skills
- Ability to work independently and in teams
- Commitment to conservation and environmental protection

A clean criminal record is required. Background screening will be conducted during recruitment.
Physical and Operational Requirements

- Support teams in isolated field locations
- Maintain alertness during extended patrol shifts
