The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure invites interested and suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Security Officer: Security Management (Ref No: 2026/20) at the Cape Town Regional Office. The successful candidate will be responsible for access control, monitoring of security systems, building and premises patrols, and the safeguarding of state property, vehicles, and vacant land. Duties include screening of visitors, verification of appointments, monitoring CCTV systems, managing keys and access cards, responding to security incidents, and applying emergency procedures when required. Applicants must meet the minimum requirements, be willing to undergo security clearance, and be prepared to work shifts.

Requirements
  • ABET qualification
  • Grade E, D & C (PSIRA)
  • No experience required

Knowledge required:

  • Access control procedures
  • Measures for the control and movement of equipment and stores
  • Prescribed security procedures (e.g. MIS, NISA, Protection of Information Act, etc.)
  • Authority of security officers under the above-mentioned documents

The applicant must be willing to undergo the process of security clearance and must be willing to work shifts.

Duties

Access Control:
Perform access control functions by conducting screening of all people entering and leaving the building through the use of X-ray machines and metal detectors. Determine whether visitors have appointments or require specific services. Contact relevant employees to confirm appointments or refer visitors to the relevant service delivery points. Ensure that admission control registers are completed and issue admission control documents or cards where required. Escort visitors and employees to relevant employees or venues when required. Lock and unlock entrances. Identify suspicious conduct and follow up on incidents. Issue access cards to employees and verify the validity of access cards.

Security and Monitoring:
Manage parking and safeguard state and private vehicles. Monitor CCTV in the security control room to identify suspicious activities. Provide key management control.

Safety and Building Security:
Ensure safety and security in buildings, premises, and land parcels by undertaking building and premises patrols. Check that doors are locked or unlocked as required. Check for water leaks and ensure taps are closed. Check fire hazards, exposed electrical contacts, and other hazards including those emanating from chemicals. Check lights and switch them on or off as required. Identify suspicious objects and packages.

Emergency Procedures:
Apply emergency procedures in situations such as bomb scares, riots, and other emergencies. Alert emergency services and departmental management when necessary.

Land Protection:
Safeguard vacant land against illegal occupation.

Candidates are not required to submit certified copies of qualifications and related documents at application stage. Only shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of qualifications and other related documents on or before the interview date, which should not be older than six months.

Applicants submitting an incorrect or old Z83 application form will be disqualified. PART A and PART B of the Z83 form must be fully completed. PART C to PART G may refer to the attached CV where space is limited.
