Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager (TRIM) is inviting suitable, hardworking, and committed individuals to apply for a Fixed Term Contract opportunity within the organization. The organization is currently recruiting 30 General Workers who will assist the Electrical Engineering Works department with various construction and maintenance duties related to the Overhead Traction Equipment (OHTE). These roles form part of an operational support team that ensures railway electrical infrastructure is maintained to a high standard while supporting ongoing construction activities.

This is a temporary fixed-term contract position and successful candidates will be expected to perform manual tasks and support technical teams in ensuring that operations are carried out safely, efficiently, and within the required timeframes.

The General Worker position is an important operational support role within the Electrical Engineering Works division. Successful applicants will assist construction teams and maintenance teams working on railway electrical infrastructure.

The work environment may involve working outdoors, sometimes under challenging weather conditions, and may include working at heights or within confined spaces. Candidates must therefore be physically capable and committed to maintaining strict safety standards.

Job Purpose

The main purpose of this role is to assist the RNC Construction teams during maintenance and construction work related to railway electrical infrastructure. The General Worker will provide essential support in ensuring that tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company procedures.

The role also ensures that all assigned duties are carried out effectively so that railway electrical systems remain operational and safe for train operations. Workers will be required to assist skilled employees, supervisors, and team leaders in performing daily operational tasks and general labor duties on site.

By supporting maintenance and construction activities, General Workers contribute to the reliability of the rail network and help ensure that railway operations continue without unnecessary interruptions.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Successful candidates will be expected to perform a variety of tasks as instructed by their Supervisor or Team Leader. These responsibilities may include the following:

Carrying Out Assigned Tasks

General Workers must follow instructions from the Supervisor or Team Leader and complete all assigned duties within the required timeframes. Workers are expected to demonstrate discipline, responsibility, and teamwork while performing their tasks.

Material Handling

Workers will assist with the handling, loading, and offloading of materials used during construction or maintenance activities. This may involve carrying equipment, tools, electrical materials, and other supplies required for the job.

Site Cleaning and Preparation

Maintaining a clean and organized worksite is an essential part of construction and maintenance work. Workers will be responsible for tasks such as:

  • Removing weeds and vegetation around work areas
  • Sweeping floors and cleaning workspaces
  • Stacking materials properly
  • Removing rubble or excess materials
  • Disposing of waste in the correct manner

These tasks help ensure that work areas remain safe and organized.

Use of Hand Tools

General Workers must be able to use non-mechanised hand tools commonly used in construction environments. These may include tools used for cleaning, digging, carrying materials, and other manual tasks.

Workers must also ensure that tools are properly maintained, cleaned, and stored after use.

Supporting Construction Activities

General Workers will assist construction teams with various operational duties on site. This may include preparing equipment, supporting technicians, and assisting in the erection of ladders or other equipment required for overhead electrical work.

Carrying and Erecting Extension Ladders

The role may involve carrying and erecting 12-meter extension ladders, which are used during electrical maintenance activities. Workers must follow safety procedures when performing these tasks to prevent accidents.

Maintaining Safety Standards

Safety is a top priority in railway construction and maintenance environments. Workers must always follow safety regulations and wear protective clothing when required.

They must also report any hazards or unsafe conditions immediately to the Supervisor.

Required Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

Educational Requirements

  • Applicants must have at least a Grade 9 qualification or equivalent. Alternatively, candidates with at least six months of relevant working experience in a similar environment may also be considered.

Physical Fitness

  • Due to the physical nature of the job, candidates must be physically fit and able to perform manual labor tasks. Successful applicants will be required to undergo a medical examination and must be declared fit for duty before starting work.

Safety Awareness

  • Candidates must demonstrate a strong awareness of health and safety practices. Workers must always follow safety procedures and ensure that they do not endanger themselves or their colleagues while performing tasks.

Communication Skills

  • Applicants must be able to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing, to ensure clear understanding of instructions and safety guidelines.

Ability to Work in Challenging Conditions

  • The work may take place outdoors and in varying weather conditions. Candidates must therefore be willing and able to work in hot, cold, rainy, or windy conditions if required.
