The Site Operations Department is seeking a qualified candidate for the following position based in Free State:

Reporting To: Safety Manager

Job Summary

The Construction Safety Officer is tasked with creating and maintaining a safe working environment by developing, implementing, and enforcing health and safety policies. Responsibilities include conducting regular workplace inspections, performing safety audits, and providing comprehensive training to employees on safe work practices, emergency procedures, and the use of safety equipment. The role involves investigating accidents and incidents to identify root causes and recommend preventative measures. Additionally, the Construction Safety Officer ensures compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations, identifies workplace hazards, assesses associated risks, and fosters a culture of safety across the organization. Effective communication and collaboration with employees and management are critical to success in this role.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for the Construction Safety Officer position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Matric / Grade 12 certificate.
  • A National Diploma in Safety/Risk Management or a related field, such as Occupational Health and Safety, is highly advantageous.
  • Registration with the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) as a Construction Health and Safety Officer.
  • Certifications in Safety Management Systems, such as SAMTRAC or NEBOSH, are highly desirable.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in construction safety or a similar role, such as Traffic Safety Officer.
  • A valid driver’s license (Code B or higher).
  • Demonstrated experience in Construction Health and Safety Management.
Operational Requirements

The Construction Safety Officer will undertake the following responsibilities in this dynamic and challenging role:

  • Develop, implement, and enforce comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Identify potential workplace hazards through regular assessments and evaluate associated risks to mitigate dangers.
  • Conduct thorough workplace inspections and safety audits to ensure compliance with regulations and identify areas for improvement.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents to determine root causes, document findings, and recommend effective preventative measures.
  • Deliver engaging safety training programs to employees, covering topics such as safe work practices, emergency response protocols, and proper use of safety equipment.
  • Stay informed about current and emerging health and safety regulations to ensure full compliance across all operations.
  • Communicate safety policies, procedures, and updates clearly to employees and management, fostering collaboration with various departments on safety-related initiatives.
