Security within justice facilities is fundamental to maintaining public confidence in the legal system. Court buildings, magistrate offices, and related facilities must operate in safe, controlled, and secure environments to ensure uninterrupted service delivery. The Security Officer role is therefore essential in supporting the Department’s mandate

The successful candidate will be required to sign a performance agreement as part of the appointment process.

Purpose of the Role

The Security Officer will be responsible for maintaining safety and security within the Magistrate Office premises. This includes controlling access, monitoring security systems, preventing unauthorized entry or exit of prohibited items, and ensuring compliance with applicable safety and security legislation.

The role contributes directly to the Department’s goal of providing secure and accessible justice services to the public.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Senior Certificate)
  • Knowledge of Physical Security procedures and processes
  • Understanding of Safety and Security Legislative Frameworks
  • PSIRA Grade C registration

Key Performance Areas

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following duties:

1. Access Control

  • Monitor and control entry and exit points
  • Verify identification of staff, visitors, and contractors
  • Prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas

2. Safety Management

  • Ensure the safety of staff, members of the public, and court users
  • Identify and respond to potential security risks
  • Maintain order within the building and surrounding premises

3. Prohibited Items Control

  • Screen individuals and items entering or leaving the premises
  • Ensure compliance with security protocols
  • Confiscate and report unauthorized or dangerous items

4. CCTV Monitoring

  • Monitor CCTV cameras and surveillance systems
  • Identify suspicious activities
  • Report incidents promptly and accurately

5. Biometric System Administration

  • Enroll staff members onto the biometric access system
  • Ensure accurate and secure data management
  • Maintain system functionality and report technical issues

6. Weekend Access Control

  • Provide controlled access to authorized staff during weekends
  • Ensure compliance with access procedures outside normal working hours
