Position Overview: Assistant Operator (X5) – B2 Band
The Assistant Operator will support the continuous 24-hour operation of wastewater treatment plants. The successful candidates will assist in ensuring that effluent discharge and sludge disposal processes are conducted in strict accordance with ERWAT operational procedures and environmental regulations.
This role is critical in maintaining compliance with environmental standards and ensuring that treatment plants function efficiently and safely at all times.
Key Responsibilities
The Assistant Operator will be responsible for supporting operational processes across wastewater treatment facilities. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting with the daily operation of wastewater treatment plant equipment and machinery
- Monitoring treatment processes to ensure compliance with environmental standards
- Supporting sludge handling, disposal, and management processes
- Assisting with routine plant inspections and reporting irregularities
- Ensuring that effluent discharge meets required quality standards
- Supporting plant maintenance activities when required
- Recording operational data and assisting with reporting requirements

Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
Option 1:
- Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) with 15 years’ experience in the ERWAT Operations Department as a General Worker
OR
Option 2:
- Grade 8 qualification
- Operator’s Certificate or Wastewater Treatment Practice NQF Level 2
- Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in wastewater treatment or related operations
Candidates who meet these requirements and have practical experience in plant operations will be given preference.
