The Health Systems Trust (HST) invites interested and suitably qualified applicants to apply for the position of TB Support Officers (81 posts) under the National Department of Health Global Fund Tuberculosis (TB) Project in the eThekwini District, KwaZulu-Natal. This role focuses on strengthening community outreach services to improve TB case-finding through screening, testing of high-risk groups, tracing of patients who have interrupted treatment, and ensuring adherence and retention in care through education and counselling.

The annual salary package for this position ranges from R49,386 to R67,217.40 in line with Global Fund requirements. This is a fixed-term contract, renewable subject to continued funding and satisfactory performance. Applications must be submitted by 30 January 2026 at 16h30.

PURPOSE

The Health Systems Trust (HST) wishes to appoint eighty-one (81) TB Support Officers for the National Department of Health Global Fund Tuberculosis (TB) Project in eThekwini district.

The TB Support Officers will support community outreach services to increase TB case-finding by providing screening and testing of high-risk groups, tracing and linking to care people diagnosed with TB but not started on treatment, as well as those with interrupted treatment. The role further ensures adherence to treatment and retention in care through education and counselling of TB patients.

This is a fixed-term contract position, renewable based on continuation of funding and performance. The facilities that will be supported in this project are listed below under Application Enquiries.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct TB screening and specimen collection from close contacts of TB patients and other high-risk groups at community level.
  • Strengthen referral systems for patients who test TB-positive and sick household contacts to the nearest clinic.
  • Conduct tracing of people (including TB patients) who miss clinic appointments.
  • Conduct door-to-door outreach services.
  • Support mobile Digital Chest X-ray services at outreach events to increase demand for TB screening services.
  • Provide health education and counselling for TB patients.
  • Support adherence clubs to enhance treatment adherence and retention in care.
  • Report daily to the supervisor (Enrolled Nursing Assistant).
  • Capture daily activities on monitoring and evaluation (M&E) tools.
  • Ensure timely reporting of M&E data.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Grade 12
  • Certification as a Community Health Worker will be an advantage.
  • Experience in health promotion and health education.
  • Ability to operate a mobile device.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and counselling skills.

REMUNERATION

The salary package for this position, based on Global Fund requirements, ranges from:
