Each successful candidate will be assigned to a Safe Space facility within the respective district and will work closely with the Safe Space Coordinator and other staff members.

Job Purpose

The Cleaner will be responsible for maintaining a clean, hygienic, and safe environment within the Sex Worker Safe Space facility.

The position ensures that all areas within the facility remain properly cleaned, sanitized, and organized to support infection prevention and health and safety standards. The Cleaner contributes to creating a welcoming environment where clients feel respected and comfortable when accessing services.

This role supports the overall mission of the organization by promoting dignity, hygiene, and safety for clients, staff members, and visitors who make use of the facility.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Safe Space Coordinator and will ensure that cleaning tasks are completed consistently and according to the organization’s hygiene and safety procedures.

Key Responsibilities

The Cleaner will perform a range of duties related to facility hygiene, sanitation, and general upkeep of the Safe Space environment.

Cleaning and maintaining facilities

Ensure that all areas of the Safe Space facility remain clean and well maintained at all times
Clean offices, consultation rooms, waiting areas, bathrooms, kitchens, and common spaces
Sweep, mop, and sanitize floors regularly to maintain hygiene standards
Dust furniture, equipment, and surfaces to remove dirt and prevent contamination

Sanitizing and disinfecting surfaces

Disinfect frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, desks, chairs, and light switches
Ensure infection prevention standards are consistently applied throughout the facility
Use cleaning chemicals and disinfectants safely and effectively
Support the prevention of infections by maintaining high sanitation standards

Waste management

Collect and dispose of waste according to health and safety protocols
Separate general waste from medical or sanitary waste where required
Ensure waste bins are emptied regularly and replaced with clean liners
Handle potentially hazardous waste materials with care and according to guidelines

Maintaining a welcoming environment

Ensure that all areas of the facility remain tidy, organized, and welcoming
Create an environment where clients feel comfortable and respected
Ensure that restrooms and shared areas remain clean throughout the day
Maintain a professional standard of cleanliness that reflects the values of the organization

Stock management and replenishment

Monitor cleaning supplies and toiletries used within the facility
Replenish items such as soap, toilet paper, and cleaning products when required
Inform the Safe Space Coordinator when cleaning supplies are running low
Ensure that cleaning equipment remains in good working condition

Reporting maintenance issues

Report broken equipment, damaged furniture, or safety hazards
Inform supervisors about plumbing issues, electrical problems, or structural damage
Assist in maintaining a safe environment by identifying risks early

Compliance with policies

Follow all organizational policies related to infection prevention and occupational health and safety
Maintain confidentiality regarding clients and services offered within the Safe Space
Conduct duties in a respectful and professional manner at all times

Professional development

Participate in training sessions provided by the organization
Stay updated on best practices related to hygiene, infection prevention, and workplace safety
Apply updated knowledge and practices to daily work responsibilities

Minimum Requirements

Applicants interested in the Cleaner positions must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Minimum education level of Grade 8 (advantageous but not always mandatory)
