Candidates must have Grade 12, a valid driver’s licence, SAMTRAC or NEBOSH certification, good communication and administrative skills, computer literacy and a strong commitment to workplace safety.

About the Role

The Junior Health and Safety Officer will play an important role in supporting the implementation and maintenance of health, safety, and environmental systems. Key Responsibilities

The Junior Health and Safety Officer will perform a variety of operational and administrative duties related to workplace health and safety.

Safety Management and Compliance
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and maintenance of Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) systems.
  • Support compliance with relevant South African legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act), Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COID), and Environmental Conservation legislation.
  • Monitor workplace activities to ensure compliance with company safety standards and legal requirements.
  • Assist in maintaining safety records, policies, procedures, and compliance documentation.
  • Participate in workplace inspections to identify hazards and areas requiring corrective action.
Training and Awareness
  • Identify workplace safety training requirements.
  • Coordinate employee health and safety training sessions.
  • Assist with the scheduling and administration of toolbox talks and safety awareness programmes.
  • Maintain accurate records of completed training activities and attendance registers.
  • Promote a positive safety culture throughout all business operations.
Incident and Accident Management
  • Assist in incident, accident, and near-miss investigations.
  • Collect and organise relevant information and supporting evidence.
  • Participate in root cause analysis processes.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of corrective and preventive action plans.
  • Monitor follow-up actions to ensure effective resolution of identified issues.
Safety Documentation and Reporting
  • Prepare and maintain safety reports and compliance records.

  • Maintain document control systems for health and safety records.
  • Ensure all mandatory registers and documentation remain up to date.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Administration
  • Manage the issuing and tracking of personal protective equipment.

  • Monitor PPE usage and compliance within operational areas.
  • Assist in identifying PPE requirements for employees and contractors.
Inspections, Audits, and Monitoring
  • Support routine workplace inspections and safety audits.
  • Maintain records relating to inspections and corrective actions.
  • Monitor outstanding findings and follow up on closure requirements.
  • Assist with environmental monitoring and compliance activities where necessary.
  • Ensure medical surveillance requirements are coordinated and appropriately documented.
Contractor Safety Management
  • Liaise with contractors regarding safety compliance requirements.
  • Assist with contractor inductions and onboarding processes.
  • Verify contractor safety documentation and compliance records.
  • Monitor contractor activities to ensure adherence to safety standards and procedures.
Emergency Preparedness
  • Support emergency planning and readiness initiatives.
  • Assist with evacuation drills and emergency response exercises.
  • Help develop and review safe working procedures and emergency plans.
  • Participate in emergency response activities when required.
Requirements
