Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) Officer Vacancy – Feltex

Feltex invites interested and suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) Officer at Feltex Foam in Durban. This role is responsible for identifying, assessing, and eliminating workplace risks while ensuring compliance with safety, health, and environmental standards, policies, and legislation. The successful candidate will support the maintenance of safe working practices, oversee incident investigations, coordinate training and emergency preparedness, and contribute to the continuous improvement of the SHE Management System.

Job Purpose

The purpose of this role is to identify, assess, and eliminate all potential risks within the workplace to ensure a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible working environment. The SHE Officer will ensure full compliance with company policies, safety standards, and applicable legislation while supporting continuous improvement of safety, health, and environmental performance across the plant.

Educational Requirements
  • School Leaving Certificate (Grade 12)
  • National Diploma in Safety Management or Environmental Health
  • SAMTRAC qualification
Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a similar role
Key Performance Areas and Responsibilities
SHE Policies and Procedures
  • Ensure the implementation and compliance of SHE policies and procedures.
  • Operate in accordance with standard operating procedures and within the parameters of applicable legislation.
SHE Management
  • Implement and maintain adherence to safe working practices and policies.
  • Monitor compliance with safety, health, and environmental requirements in the workplace.
  • Ensure health, safety, and security standards are maintained at all times.
  • Conduct Planned Task Observations and take appropriate action to address identified risks.
  • Conduct incident investigations.
  • Attend SHE meetings and perform secretariat duties.
  • Take responsibility for the ordering, issuing, and record-keeping of annual PPE distribution to employees.
  • Assist with Atmospheric Emission Licensing (AEL) requirements.
SHE Management System
  • Comply with all requirements of the SHE Management System.
  • Organise and implement administrative systems and procedures, providing necessary support functions.
  • Maintain ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 Safety Management System requirements.
SHE Audits
  • Conduct SHE and risk audits.
  • Participate in all audit processes.
  • Raise and address issues identified during audits with relevant Heads of Department.
Risk Assessments
  • Identify potential hazards and critical safety issues in the workplace.
Emergency Management
  • Monitor and control emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers, breathing apparatus, and spill kits.
  • Respond to and manage safety, health, and environmental emergencies.
Training
  • Coordinate emergency evacuation drills.
  • Conduct toolbox talks and safety awareness training.
  • Assist with SHE induction training for employees.
Incident and Accident Investigations
  • Coordinate incident and accident investigations.
  • Conduct investigations into workplace incidents.
  • Make recommendations and manage the implementation of corrective actions.
SHE Administration
  • Maintain and update SHE notice boards.
  • Conduct Behavioural Safety Observations (BSO’s) and manage Continuous Improvement Programmes (CIP’s).
  • Ensure all files are inspection-ready and properly maintained.
  • Ensure appointment letters are updated.
  • Complete and track action lists.
