Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the minimum educational and security requirements for the position.
Candidates should have:
- Grade 10 or an equivalent qualification recognised by SAQA
- Basic Security Officer’s Course
- At least Grade C security grading
- Valid PSIRA certificate
- Minimum of one year of experience in the security industry
A valid driver’s licence will serve as an added advantage.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Security Officer will be responsible for maintaining security and controlling access to the High Court premises. The position involves protecting employees, visitors, departmental assets, equipment, stores, documents and other property.
Access control will form an important part of the role. The Security Officer will determine whether visitors have appointments and establish which service they require. Where necessary, the relevant employee will be contacted to confirm the appointment, or the visitor will be directed to the appropriate service delivery point.
The successful candidate will also ensure that the admission control register is completed correctly and that admission control documents or access cards are issued when required.
Walk-through metal detectors will be used to strengthen access control and prevent unauthorised persons and dangerous objects from entering the building or premises.
Any security breaches or non-compliance must be identified and reported to the supervisor.
Control of Equipment, Stores and Documents
The Security Officer will be responsible for controlling the movement of departmental equipment, stores, documents and assets.
Responsibilities include:
- Ensuring that equipment, documents and stores do not enter or leave the premises without authorisation
- Ensuring that relevant registers are completed
- Controlling the movement of equipment and departmental assets
- Inspecting vehicles entering and leaving the premises
- Gathering information about missing or stolen equipment and stores
- Reporting missing or stolen equipment and stores
- Handling documents at points of entry according to their classification and applicable prescripts
Security officers must ensure that departmental assets do not leave the building or premises without the necessary authorisation.
Control Room and CCTV Monitoring
The successful candidate may be required to operate control room security equipment and monitor activities taking place within the department’s premises.
The role includes:
- Monitoring CCTV equipment
- Monitoring movements, events and activities within the premises
- Monitoring access points
- Ensuring that security systems are functioning properly
- Reporting security incidents to the supervisor
- Identifying non-compliance with security policies and procedures
- Taking appropriate action to improve office security
The Security Officer must remain alert to suspicious activities, security breaches and other incidents that could place people or departmental property at risk.
Building Patrols and Emergency Procedures
The position includes conducting building and premises patrols to identify potential security risks and check the condition of the premises.
The Security Officer must be able to respond appropriately to emergency situations and follow established emergency procedures.
Emergency situations may include:
- Bomb scares
- Riots
- Security threats
- Alarm activations
- Other emergencies affecting the safety of the premises
The Security Officer must alert emergency services and departmental management when required and respond appropriately to alarm systems.
Occurrence Books and Incident Records
All incidents must be recorded in the relevant occurrence books or registers.
The Security Officer must ensure that:
- All recorded information is accurate
- Occurrence books and registers are updated when necessary
- Incidents are properly documented
- Information is verified with the supervisor where required
The Security Officer will liaise with the supervisor to verify information recorded in the occurrence book or relevant registers.
The successful candidate may also be required to perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor or Court Manager.

Important Z83 Requirements
The Z83 application form must be completed correctly.
The application must clearly indicate:
