About the Role

The SHE Officer will be responsible for implementing, maintaining, monitoring, and continuously improving Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Systems across all operational areas. The position requires a proactive approach to risk management and compliance monitoring while supporting the organization’s commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace.

The successful candidate will oversee safety management activities at various operational sites, shafts, workshops, and branches within the designated area of responsibility. This includes ensuring compliance with applicable Occupational Health and Safety legislation, Mine Health and Safety requirements, client-specific safety standards, and internal company procedures.

The role also involves managing safety documentation, conducting inspections and audits, facilitating safety training, investigating incidents, monitoring environmental compliance, and coordinating emergency preparedness activities.

Key Responsibilities

The SHE Officer will be entrusted with a broad range of responsibilities aimed at ensuring compliance and promoting a strong safety culture throughout the organization.

Compliance Management
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant Safety, Health, and Environmental legislation.
  • Monitor adherence to Mine Health and Safety Act requirements and Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with client-specific safety standards and contractual obligations.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives relating to safety and environmental performance.
Site Inspections and Audits
  • Conduct regular workplace inspections to identify hazards and potential risks.
  • Perform comprehensive safety audits across operational sites.
  • Evaluate compliance levels and recommend corrective actions where necessary.
  • Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of corrective and preventive measures.
Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification
  • Conduct risk assessments and hazard identification processes.
  • Facilitate hazard reporting and risk mitigation activities.
  • Review and update risk registers where required.
  • Assist management in implementing effective risk control measures.
Safety File Management
  • Compile and maintain safety files in accordance with client and legislative requirements.
  • Ensure all safety documentation remains current and compliant.
  • Manage branch-specific and project-specific safety files.
  • Maintain records of inspections, audits, incidents, training, and compliance activities.
Safety Training and Awareness
  • Coordinate toolbox talks and safety meetings.
  • Facilitate safety awareness campaigns and educational initiatives.
  • Support employee inductions and onboarding activities.
  • Promote safe work practices and behavioural safety programs.
  • Assist with emergency preparedness training and evacuation drills.
Incident Investigation
  • Investigate workplace incidents, accidents, unsafe acts, and near-miss occurrences.
  • Compile detailed incident reports and recommendations.
  • Identify root causes and implement corrective measures.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of actions implemented following investigations.
Personal Protective Equipment Compliance
  • Monitor the use and condition of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ensure employees comply with PPE requirements at all times.
  • Conduct inspections to verify PPE availability and suitability.
  • Report non-compliance and assist in implementing corrective actions.
Environmental Compliance
  • Monitor environmental management practices across operational sites.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation and client requirements.
  • Identify environmental risks and recommend improvement measures.
  • Assist with environmental reporting and documentation requirements.
Reporting and Documentation
  • Prepare and submit SHE reports within required timelines.
  • Maintain compliance trackers and performance records.
  • Compile monthly and periodic safety statistics.
  • Ensure accurate and timely submission of all compliance documentation.
Safety Culture Development
  • Promote a positive and proactive safety culture throughout operations.
  • Encourage employee participation in safety initiatives.
  • Support management in achieving safety objectives and targets.
  • Act as a champion for workplace health, safety, and environmental excellence.
Minimum Requirements

Candidates interested in applying for this position must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Matric Certificate.
  • SAMTRAC qualification or equivalent SHE qualification (compulsory).
  • Passport 360 training and/or experience (compulsory).
  • HIRA Certificate or Risk Management qualification.
  • Legal Liability Training covering OHSA and MHSA requirements.
  • Incident Investigation Certificate and relevant experience.
  • Comply Works or HSEC training.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience working as a SHE Officer.
  • Valid Driver’s License (compulsory).
  • Strong computer literacy.
  • Excellent administrative and record-keeping skills.
