The School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the full-time and permanent position of Laboratory Assistant. The purpose of the job is to provide laboratory analytical and technical support to the School. The successful applicant will report to the Analytical Services Specialist and will be responsible for maintaining the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate laboratories according to health and safety regulations, as well as assisting the students and researchers in all their laboratory analytical needs, and contributing to the general functioning of the laboratories in the School.
Brief Description
Minimum qualifications, experience and requirements:
Applicants for the position should possess a minimum of a Grade 12 certificate. The applicants must have a minimum of 2 years’ previous experience in a laboratory environment and must understand current health and safety regulations. A driver’s license will be an advantage. The successful candidate must also possess the following attributes:
Attention to detail, Strong analytical skills, Critical thinker, and Great communication skills
Key performance areas:
The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate expertise in the following
key performance areas: –
- Perform laboratory tests on various equipment
- Prepare samples/specimens
- Perform daily quality control checks
- Prepare reports with reliable data
- Interpret results based on findings
- Use latest methodologies and best practices
- Adhere to correct procedures and policies
- Document all activities
- Maintain and track results
- Maintain cleanliness, orderliness and supplies
- Help with administrative tasks when needed
- Perform various tasks that are necessary for the general and smooth running of
the School.
