POSITION OVERVIEW:

The City of Cape Town seeks dedicated individuals to join the Fire Services Department as Wildland Fire Fighters. This role involves critical responsibilities in combating vegetation fires and maintaining fire-fighting equipment, requiring physical fitness, teamwork, and resilience under pressure. The position offers an opportunity to serve the community while developing skills through continuous training.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum Grade 12 Certificate
  • 18 years or older
  • Willingness to complete practical and theoretical firefighting training
  • Ability to be stationed at any Fire Station within the City of Cape Town
  • Commitment to work 40 hours per week, including shifts
  • Previous experience in fire-related industries (e.g., Wildland Firefighter 1 and/or 2) is advantageous
  • Availability to work additional hours or overtime on short notice
  • Ability to collaborate in a team and handle stressful situations effectively
  • No criminal record

COMPULSORY FITNESS TEST: All shortlisted candidates must pass the following physical assessments:

  • Reach test (1.9 m)
  • 2.4 km run (Males: 12 minutes; Females: 13 minutes)
  • Push-ups (30 in 60 seconds)
  • Sit-ups (30 in 60 seconds)
  • Dead load carry (2 x 25 kg drums over 100 m)

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PASSING CANDIDATES:

  • Pass a written assessment and interview
  • Submit fingerprints or identity number for criminal record verification (no other clearances accepted)
  • Undergo a medical evaluation
  • Complete a compulsory drug test

  • Execute fire-fighting operations under guidance
  • Respond to and combat vegetation fires
  • Inspect and maintain fire-fighting equipment
  • Clean and maintain fire-fighting vehicles
  • Perform fire station duties and maintenance
