Main purpose of the job: Assist on all tuberculosis and phage-related studies.
Location: University of the Witwatersrand and NHLS, Braamfontein.

Key performance areas

  • Arrange and maintain biorepository of all products used or generated (i.e., bacterial and/or mycobacteriophage strains).
  • Assist in keeping the laboratory clean (BSL2 and BSL3 facilities).
  • Management project related consumables and reagents.
  • Assist with manuscript preparation.
  • Appropriate presentation and reporting of data.
  • Daily and/or weekly reporting of progress to project lead.
  • Assist with data management, curation, and analysis.
  • Maintaining accurate records of experimental data (in a laboratory notebook).
  • Assist on multiple projects currently ongoing in the lab.
  • Plan and execute experiments.

Required minimum education and training
Honours degree in Molecular Biology/ Genetics/ Bioinformatics or Mycobacteriology

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

  • Good Laboratory Practise would be advantageous.
  • Computer literate with excellent report-writing skills.
  • Should possess good communication skills (both written and oral) with effective time management.
  • Should possess good interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Should be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Should be able to work under pressure and be pro-active.

Required minimum work experience
Minimum 1 years’ experience working in a microbiology lab
