The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) invites South African unemployed graduates to apply for Internship Programme for a period of 12 months.

About the job:

The CSIR has an Internship opportunity in the Hydrogen South Africa and Carbon Capture & Utilisation (HySA & CCU) research team, within the Chemicals Cluster.

The purpose of this Internship is to provide graduates with an opportunity to gain practical work experience through research and development of competitive technologies and innovative products under the guidance of researchers and engineers within cross-functional teams. This position is based in Pretoria.

Key responsibilities:

Under supervision, the Intern will be required to:

  • Assist in conducting literature searches for research projects;
  • Assist in conducting experimental work in the laboratory for research projects;
  • Assist in compiling reports and other project-related documents;
  • Assist in conducting safety and environmental risk assessments and develop risk management plans in the pilot plant;
  • Assist with the characterization of products/materials (e.g. SEM, XRD, TGA, etc. – in line with the training provided;
  • Assist with the implementation of general housekeeping of labs and scaling-up plants;
  • Operate lab equipment in the chemical plant in a very safe and environmentally friendly manner;
  • Understand all the material safety data sheets (MSDSs) and contribute to developing standard operating procedures (SOPs);
  • Do regular maintenance of the plant in line with training provided;
  • Perform any other duties as instructed by the supervisor.

Qualifications, skills, and experience:

  • A National Diploma in chemical engineering or related field;
  • A B-Tech degree will be advantageous;
  • Must be Computer literate with MS Office Package;  
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written);
  • The following skills are required:

    • Pro-active and focused;
    • Willingness to learn research and report-writing skills;
    • Willingness to learn and work under pressure;
  • Ability to prioritize and have a good sense of urgency and accuracy.
  • All international qualifications require an evaluation report/certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
