The SA Cargo invites interested and suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Assistant Safety Officer to be based in Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape.

We are looking for a highly skilled Assistant Safety Officer for PE- Gqeberha to assist with the maintenance of the Safety system manuals and documentation control system. Assist with and supply of all HSE Tender document requirements timeously.

Provide Safety awareness training to all staff. Prepare Safety statistics and reports at required intervals will be assisting in planning, implementing and overseeing company’s employee safety at the branch level, and to monitor, maintain and continually improve quality management and SHE management systems to ensure that the company is in compliance and adheres to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines to reduce work-related injuries in the company.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Not limited to:

  • Assist with designing and maintaining safety systems.
  • Ensuring health and safety, environmental and quality standards are met on-site.
  • Identifying potential hazards.
  • Completing risk assessments and on-site inspections.
  • Suggesting improvements to working processes.
  • Do risk assessments during operations for any danger or possible dangers, implement measures to eliminate or isolate this danger, document this for perusal by Transnet, DoL, SAMSA.
  • Have quarterly meetings with safety representatives, discuss safety issues, incidents and find ways of minimising or eliminating them.
  • Arrange for training of staff in safety related matters.(safety induction etc.)
  • Meet with shipping lines, Transnet and customers to establish safety requirements.
  • Do monthly spot-check on safety equipment, firefighting, first aid, safety harnesses, etc.
  • Ensure safety representatives have completed monthly and quarterly inspection lists.
  • Investigate safety related incidents and accidents.
  • Continuously monitor the facility for both internal and external security threats and risks.
  • Advise facility management on security related issues.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Prepare reports and conduct preliminary investigations of security related incidents.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Qualification in SAMATRAC
  • Computer literacy
  • 5 years experience in a similar position
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Initiative, drive, and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Occasional long hours and weekends
  • Systems analysis and evaluation
  • Train and motivate others
