The SA Cargo Services invites interested and suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Safety Officer to be based in Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape.

Location: Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth

Closing Date: 13 September 2024

We are looking for qualified individual to be responsible for ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety (OHS) guidelines in a workplace at the PE- Gqeberha Branch. And to play a crucial role in promoting a safe working environment by advising on safety measures, conducting risk assessments, and enforcing preventative measures.

DUTIES- not limited to the below:
· Research and implement (training or posters) new safety procedures, PPE, etc.
· Ensure all lifting equipment is checked and tested as per legal requirements.
· Ensure all driven machinery (forklifts, ships cranes, mobile cranes, etc) is checked and tested as per legal requirements
· Ensure all machine operators are certified as per legal requirements.
· Ensure that lifting equipment is used as per manufacturer specifications.
· Ensure that hoppers and conveyers are set up and operating safely.
· Do risk assessments during operations for any danger or possible dangers, implement measures to eliminate or isolate this danger, document this for perusal by Transnet, DoL, SAMSA.
· Have quarterly meetings with safety representatives, discuss safety issues, incidents and find ways of minimising or eliminating them.
· Arrange for training of staff in safety related matters. (Safety induction etc.)
· Meet with shipping lines, Transnet, and customers to establish safety requirements.
· Do monthly spot-check on safety equipment, firefighting, first aid, safety harnesses, etc.
· Ensure safety representatives have completed monthly and quarterly inspection lists.
· Investigate safety related incidents and accidents.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
· Qualification in Health and Safety /SAMATRAC
· Computer literacy
· Background experience is stevedoring will be an added advantage
· 5 years’ experience in a similar position
· Good interpersonal skills
· Initiative, drive, and ability to work with minimal supervision.
· Ability to work under pressure.
· Occasional long hours and weekends.
