About the Shark Spotters Graduate Training Programme
The Shark Spotters Graduate Training Programme (SS GTP) has been designed to support graduates from under-resourced communities by providing meaningful workplace experience and accredited learning opportunities in the field of marine science.
The programme focuses on preparing graduates for successful careers by combining practical workplace training with structured learning. Participants will have an opportunity to develop technical skills, gain professional experience, expand industry knowledge, and strengthen their employability within South Africa’s growing marine science and conservation sectors.
In addition to workplace learning, the programme also aims to provide foundational competencies that can improve long-term career prospects, including assistance towards obtaining a driver’s licence where applicable. This combination of practical skills and professional development ensures that graduates leave the programme better equipped to compete within the employment market.
The initiative has been made possible through financial support from the Transport Education and Training Authority (TETA) under its Discretionary Grant Funding Programme. This funding contributes towards developing skilled graduates capable of supporting South Africa’s maritime and marine science industries.
Programme Objectives
The Graduate Training Programme has several important objectives aimed at supporting both graduates and the broader marine science sector.
