Minimum Requirements

Applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements before applying:

  • Be competent to perform the core duties of the position.

Security Officer Duties

Successful candidates will perform various security functions aimed at protecting SAPS premises, personnel and government property.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Implement access control procedures according to the Control of Access to Public Premises and Vehicles Act (Act No. 53 of 1985).
  • Verify the identity of employees, visitors and contractors entering SAPS premises.
  • Register all visitors and contractors.
  • Conduct electronic searches where required.
  • Authorise access only after legislative requirements have been met.

Minimum Requirements

Application Process

Shortlisted candidates will be required to present original copies of their South African Identity Document (ID), Senior Certificate, all educational qualifications, service certificates from previous employers indicating the occupation held, and a valid driver’s licence where applicable. All qualifications and driver’s licences will be verified with the relevant institutions.

Applicants must have no previous criminal convictions or pending criminal or departmental cases. Candidates must also consent to fingerprint collection and background investigations. Depending on the post, shortlisted candidates may be required to undergo a full security clearance process before or during employment.

The vetting process may include security screening, fingerprint verification, reference checks, and address verification where necessary. All shortlisted candidates, including those applying for Senior Management Service (SMS) positions, will be expected to attend a personal interview and complete two pre-entry assessments. These assessments include a practical exercise to evaluate technical and generic competencies required for the position, as well as an integrity assessment focusing on ethical conduct.

Candidates applying for certain identified posts will also be vetted in accordance with the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act, 2007 (Act No. 32 of 2007), and the Children’s Act, 2005 (Act No. 38 of 2005). Any candidate listed on the National Register for Sex Offenders or Part B of the Child Protection Register will be disqualified from appointment.

Applicants are expected to disclose whether they are respondents in an interim or final protection order issued under the Domestic Violence Act, 1998 (Act No. 116 of 1998), or the Protection from Harassment Act, 2011 (Act No. 17 of 2011). Such circumstances may affect eligibility for appointment.

In line with the Criminal Law (Forensic Procedures) Amendment Act, 2013 (Act No. 37 of 2013), all new SAPS employees appointed from 31 January 2015 onwards are required to provide a buccal (inside cheek) sample for the development of a forensic DNA profile. The DNA profile will be recorded in the Elimination Index of the National Forensic DNA Database.

Appointments will be made in accordance with the Public Service Act, 1994 (Act No. 103 of 1994). Individuals who previously retired from the Public Service through a severance package, early retirement, or medical retirement, as well as those with previous criminal convictions, are not eligible for appointment.
