The Wits Health Consortium invites interested and suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Cleaner (6-Month Fixed Term Contract) based at the Edendale Lay Ecumenical Centre Clinic in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg. The purpose of the role is to maintain a safe, hygienic, and clean working environment within a clinical research setting. Key responsibilities include general cleaning and housekeeping, sanitising offices and equipment, maintaining kitchen and bathroom cleanliness, serving refreshments to staff and patients, setting up venues for meetings and trainings, monitoring stock levels of cleaning supplies, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and infection prevention protocols.

The minimum requirements include Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent (Grade 10), at least one year of cleaning or housekeeping experience, and the ability to work independently while maintaining high hygiene standards. Experience in clinical, hospital, or office environments, as well as basic refreshment preparation, will be an advantage. Applicants must be reliable, trustworthy, detail-oriented, and able to work in a demanding environment while maintaining confidentiality. Key Performance Areas
  • General cleaning and housekeeping duties
  • Empty all waste bins daily
  • Clean glass doors and mirrors
  • Dust office furniture and equipment
  • Safely store all cleaning materials
  • Serve refreshments at scheduled times
  • Ensure the kitchen is always clean (wash dishes, cups, and spoons and pack them neatly – ILTBRU cups and dishes only)
  • Monitor cleanliness of kitchen appliances (fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster)
  • Stock bathrooms with relevant supplies (AM & PM)
  • Dust and sanitise office furniture and equipment including telephones, light switches, sockets, skirting, computers, whiteboards, printers, and shredders
  • Polish and sanitise desks, cupboards, chairs, and tables
  • Daily sweeping and mopping of assigned floors (AM & PM)
  • Comply with health and safety policies
  • Monitor usage and stock levels of groceries and cleaning supplies and report low stock timeously
  • Report defects, maintenance issues, or items requiring repair, replacement, or procurement
  • Perform any other duties as per duty roster
  • Clean office windows and fridge every second week
  • Set up crockery and refreshments for boardroom meetings and training sessions
  • Tidy and clean areas after meetings or events
  • Wash crockery and pack it away neatly
  • Serve patients with refreshments (AM & PM)
Required Minimum Education and Training
  • Grade 12 (Matric) preferred or equivalent (Grade 10)
  • Basic training in cleaning practices, hygiene, or housekeeping (formal or informal)
  • Knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) principles is an advantage
  • Basic food-handling or refreshment preparation knowledge is beneficial but not mandatory
Required Minimum Work Experience
  • At least 1 year experience in cleaning, housekeeping, or general domestic work
  • Experience in clinics, hospitals, laboratories, or office environments with high hygiene standards is advantageous
  • Experience preparing simple refreshments (tea, coffee, water, light snacks) is an advantage
Desirable Skills and Personal Attributes
  • Ability to perform physical cleaning tasks
  • Ability to follow a cleaning schedule and work independently
  • Knowledge of safe use of cleaning materials and chemicals
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in a clinical research environment
  • Reliable, punctual, trustworthy, and professional
  • Willingness to assist with participant refreshments and maintaining a welcoming environment
  • Ability to report maintenance or facility concerns promptly
  • Willingness to work onsite full-time and assist beyond standard duties when required
  • Accountability and ability to work in a demanding environment
  • Good customer service, empathy, and multitasking ability
