The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) is the officially recognised quality assurance body responsible for grading tourism establishments across South Africa. Independent Grading Assessors are responsible for evaluating tourism establishments against approved grading criteria while providing valuable guidance that assists businesses in maintaining and improving service quality.

Duties and Responsibilities

Independent Grading Assessors will perform various professional responsibilities related to tourism quality assurance. Key duties include:

  • Conduct assessment visits according to approved company standards and contractual requirements.
  • Apply quality management systems, procedures, and policies during assessments.
  • Respond professionally and accurately to enquiries from tourism product owners.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with accommodation establishments and tourism industry stakeholders.
  • Represent the Tourism Grading Council at relevant industry meetings and forums whenever required.
  • Achieve grading targets set within the organisational business plan.
  • Provide constructive advice and recommendations that assist establishments in improving service quality.
  • Deliver professional feedback based on grading standards.
  • Compile comprehensive written quality advisory reports that comply with TGCSA reporting standards.
  • Maintain professionalism, integrity, and objectivity throughout every assessment process.
  • Travel extensively to conduct grading assessments within allocated regions.
Minimum Requirements

Applicants must possess at least one of the following educational qualifications:

  • Grade 12 (Matric); or
  • NQF Level 4 qualification.

In addition, applicants should have:

  • A minimum of five years’ experience within the hospitality industry.
  • Excellent computer literacy.
  • The ability to work independently for extended periods.
  • South African citizenship.

Successful Independent Grading Assessors will be expected to provide the following:

  • Registration as an Individual Entity on the Central Supplier Database (CSD).

These resources are necessary to perform assessments, prepare reports, communicate with stakeholders, and manage assignments efficiently.

Service Provider Agreement and Payment

The Independent Grading Assessor role is offered under a Service Provider Agreement rather than permanent employment.

Successful assessors may receive payment of up to 65% of the grading fees paid to the Tourism Grading Council by tourism establishments. Performance will be monitored through annual reviews conducted by management together with Provincial Quality Assurance Specialists.
