The appointment is initially for a six-month period. Depending on operational requirements and performance considerations, the Legal Practice Council may, at its discretion, extend the appointment once for an additional six months.

Purpose of the Programme

The trainee programme has been developed to provide recently admitted legal practitioners with practical workplace experience in a regulatory environment. Candidates will have the opportunity to work closely with experienced professionals while gaining a deeper understanding of the legislative and regulatory framework governing the legal profession in South Africa.

The programme aims to enhance professional competencies in areas such as compliance monitoring, legal investigations, disciplinary proceedings, legal administration, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory governance.

Participants will be placed within one of the LPC’s core operational departments, where they will contribute to various regulatory functions and support the organisation’s mandate of maintaining professional standards within the legal profession.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants interested in the Trainee Legal Officer positions must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Matric or Grade 12 Certificate
  • Law Degree at NQF Level 8
  • Admission as an Attorney or Advocate within the last six months
  • Sound knowledge of the Legal Practice Act, No. 28 of 2014
  • Understanding of Section 109 Regulations
  • Knowledge of the Rules of the Legal Practice Council
  • Familiarity with the Code of Conduct for Legal Practitioners, Candidate Legal Practitioners and Juristic Entities

Candidates who do not meet the admission requirement or who were admitted more than six months ago may not qualify for consideration.

Key Responsibilities

Trainee Legal Officers will assist with assessing and monitoring compliance with the Legal Practice Act, regulations, rules, and professional codes of conduct. This includes reviewing records, identifying non-compliance issues, and supporting corrective regulatory interventions where necessary.

Administration of Statutory Processes

The role involves assisting with applications, registrations, admissions, practical vocational training contracts, and other statutory processes that fall under the authority of the Legal Practice Council.

Regulatory Record Management

Candidates will help maintain regulatory databases and ensure that practitioner and firm records remain accurate, complete, and up to date. Proper record management is critical to supporting regulatory oversight and compliance monitoring.

Fidelity Fund Compliance Support

Trainees may assist with Fidelity Fund Certificate applications and related compliance processes. This function plays an important role in ensuring legal practitioners meet the requirements necessary to provide legal services.

Examination Process Monitoring

The position also includes supporting the administration and monitoring of examination processes to ensure that assessments are conducted efficiently and in accordance with established procedures.

Complaint Assessment and Investigations

A significant component of the role involves assisting with the assessment of complaints and allegations of misconduct against legal practitioners. Trainees will help gather, analyse, and evaluate evidence and documentation related to complaints and regulatory matters.

Professional Misconduct Investigations

Candidates may participate in investigations relating to professional misconduct and regulatory non-compliance. Responsibilities may include conducting inspections, reviewing evidence, preparing reports, and following up on investigation outcomes.

Report Preparation

Trainees will assist with drafting investigation reports, recommendations, memoranda, submissions, and other regulatory documentation required for decision-making processes.

Committee Participation

The role provides exposure to regulatory decision-making structures through participation in Investigating Committees, Disciplinary Committees, and other governance forums. This experience offers valuable insight into professional accountability mechanisms within the legal profession.

Preparation of Charges and Evidence

Where applicable, candidates may assist in formulating disciplinary charges and preparing supporting documentation. Under supervision, trainees may also present findings and evidence before relevant committees and regulatory bodies.

Risk Assessment Activities

The position includes assisting with risk assessments relating to legal practices and identifying areas that may require regulatory attention or intervention.

Curatorship Administration

Trainees may support curatorship administration and court-ordered interventions where required. This provides practical exposure to complex regulatory matters involving legal practitioners and firms.

Stakeholder Support and Public Assistance

The successful candidates will provide guidance to legal practitioners, candidate legal practitioners, and members of the public. Responsibilities may include responding to enquiries, providing information, and assisting with consultations.

Communication and Liaison

The role requires regular communication with courts, government departments, legal practitioners, and other stakeholders. Effective professional communication is therefore an essential aspect of the position.

Employment Equity Considerations

The Legal Practice Council will apply Employment Equity targets in accordance with the Employment Equity Act, 55 of 1998, and the applicable employment equity measures in force at the time of appointment.
